The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released May 2024 Consumer Price Index (CPI) today. Highlights are as follows (all indexes are on a seasonally unadjusted basis):
All items increased 0.2% in the last month and increased 3.3% in the last twelve months
Food at home saw no change from April and increased 1.0% since May 2023
Cereals + bakery products increased 0.3% in the last month and increased 0.7% in the last twelve months
Meats, poultry, fish + eggs increased 0.3% since April and rose 2.4% from May 2023
Dairy + related products fell 0.3% in the last month and decreased 1.0% in the last twelve months
Fruits + vegetables increased 0.2% from April and rose 0.6% since May 2023
Other foods fell 0.3% in the last month and rose 0.4% in the last twelve months
Gasoline (all types) fell 0.5% since April and increased 2.2% from May 2023
All items, less food and energy, rose 0.2% in the last month and increased 3.4% in the last twelve months
Apparel fell 0.8% from April and increased 0.8% since May 2023
New vehicles fell 0.2% in the last month and decreased 0.8% in the last twelve months
Used cars + trucks decreased 0.5% since April and fell 9.3% from May 2023
Motor vehicle parts + equipment rose 0.5% in the last month and fell 1.1% in the last twelve months
Medical care commodities rose 1.3% from April and increased 3.1% since May 2023
Alcoholic beverages increased 0.1% in the last month and rose 1.7% in the last twelve months
Tobacco + smoking products rose by 1.6% since April and increased 7.8% from May 2023
Personal care products fell 0.3% in the last month and rose 1.3% in the last twelve months
