LIFO Tax Benefit Calculator

Instructions:

  • Enter the following values into the blue-colored cells:
    • Prior year end inventory balance (required)
    • Current year inflation rate (required)
      • Manufacturers/wholesalers: Use the Bureau of Labor Statistics Producer Price Index (BLS PPI) 2025 year end inflation rate shown in the table below that includes and most closely matches your most-predominant goods in terms of total inventory value (or enter your estimated internally-calculated inflation rate)
      • Retailers: Use the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer or Producer Price Index (BLS CPI/PPI) 2025 year end inflation rate shown in the table below that includes and most closely matches your most-predominant goods in terms of total inventory value (or enter your estimated internally-calculated inflation rate)
    • 20-year average annual inflation rate (optional): Take the same steps listed above for current year inflation rate, but select the 20Y average inflation rate
    • Combined federal & state marginal tax rate (optional): Since LIFO is applicable to both federal & state income taxes, enter the estimated combined federal & state tax rate. For example, a C-Corporation in Wisconsin would enter a 28.9% rate as their federal income tax rate is 21% & state income tax rate is 7.9%.
    • Outsourcing cost (optional): For companies who will outsource their LIFO calculation & want to calculate a LIFO return on investment or ROI value. See LIFOPro outsourcing fee table and select value that falls within the range of inventory values.
  • The green-colored cells will automatically update as soon as all values have been entered into the blue-colored input cells

Note: LIFO is adopted on a prospective basis & LIFO tax savings accrue beginning in the year of the change. Prior period benefits can NOT be retrospectively recaptured. Forecasted tax benefits are for analysis purposes only & is provided to project the potential tax savings from LIFO based on your prior year end inventory balance & historical average inflation rates.
