The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released April 2024 Consumer Price Index (CPI) today. Highlights are as follows (all indexes are on a seasonally unadjusted basis):
All items increased 0.4% in the last month and increased 3.4% in the last twelve months
Food at home rose 0.2% from March and increased 2.2% since April 2023
Cereals + bakery products increased 0.3% in the last month and increased 0.6% in the last twelve months
Meats, poultry, fish + eggs increased 0.8% since March and rose 1.3% from April 2023
Dairy + related products fell 0.4% in the last month and decreased 1.9% in the last twelve months
Fruits + vegetables decreased 0.3% from March and rose 2.0% since April 2023
Other foods increased 0.3% in the last month and rose 0.7% in the last twelve months
Gasoline (all types) rose 5.2% since March and increased 1.2% from April 2023
All items, less food and energy, rose 0.3% in the last month and increased 3.6% in the last twelve months
Apparel fell 0.1% from March and increased 1.3% since April 2023
New vehicles saw no change in the last month and decreased 0.4% in the last twelve months
Used cars + trucks decreased 0.4% since March and fell 6.9% from April 2023
Motor vehicle parts + equipment decreased 0.1% in the last month and fell 1.5% in the last twelve months
Medical care commodities rose 0.4% from March and increased 2.5% since April 2023
Alcoholic beverages increased 0.1% in the last month and rose 2.0% in the last twelve months
Tobacco + smoking products saw no change since March and increased 6.7% from April 2023
Personal care products fell 0.2% in the last month and rose 2.6% in the last twelve months
