The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released January 2024 Consumer Price Index (CPI) today. Highlights are as follows (all indexes are on a seasonally unadjusted basis):
All items increased 0.5% in the last month and increased 3.1% in the last twelve months
Food at home increased 0.7% from December and rose 1.2% since January 2023
Cereals + bakery products rose by 0.7% in the last month and increased 1.2% in the last twelve months
Meats, poultry, fish + eggs fell 0.1% since December and decreased -0.9% from January 2023
Dairy + related products rose 0.4% in the last month and decreased 1.1% in the last twelve months
Fruits + vegetables increased 1.3% from December and rose 1.1% since January 2023
Other foods increased 0.3% in the last month and rose 2.4% in the last twelve months
Gasoline (all types) fell 1.5% since December and decreased 6.4% from January 2023
All items, less food and energy, rose 0.6% in the last month and increased 3.9% in the last twelve months
Apparel rose 1.7% from December and increased 0.1% since January 2023
New vehicles rose 0.2% in the last month and increased 0.7% in the last twelve months
Used cars + trucks increased 0.2% since December and increased 0.8% from January 2023
Motor vehicle parts + equipment rose by 0.7% in the last month and decreased 0.8% in the last twelve months
Medical care commodities decreased 0.6% from December and increased 3.0% since January 2023
Alcoholic beverages rose 0.3% in the last month and increased 2.3% in the last twelve months
Tobacco + smoking products rose 0.3% since December and increased 7.4% from January 2023
Personal care products increased 0.5% in the last month and rose 3.5% in the last twelve months
