The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released August 2023 Consumer Price Index (CPI) today. Highlights are as follows (all indexes are on a seasonally unadjusted basis):
- All items increased 0.4% in the last month and rose 3.7% in the last twelve months
- Food at home increased 0.2% from July and increased 4.3% since August 2022
- Cereals + bakery products increased 0.1% in the last month and increased 6.0% in the last twelve months
- Meats, poultry, fish + eggs increased 0.5% since July and saw no change from August 2022
- Dairy + related products decreased 2.5% in the last month and fell 18.2% in the last twelve months
- Fruits + vegetables increased 0.3% from July and increased 2.9% since August 2022
- Other foods rose 0.1% in the last month and increased 3.9% in the last twelve months
- Gasoline (all types) rose 5.9% since July and decreased 3.3% from August 2022
- All items, less food and energy, rose 0.2% in the last month and increased 4.3% in the last twelve months
- Apparel decreased 1.6% from July and rose 3.1% since August 2022
- New vehicles rose by 2.9% in the last month and saw no change in the last twelve months
- Used cars + trucks decreased 1.4% since July and fell 6.6% from August 2022
- Motor vehicle parts + equipment increased 0.2% in the last month and rose 2.0% in the last twelve months
- Medical care commodities rose 0.6% from July and increased 4.5% since August 2022
- Alcoholic beverages rose 0.1% in the last month and rose 3.7% in the last twelve months
- Tobacco + smoking products rose 0.6 % since July and increased 5.6% from August 2022
- Personal care products increased 0.3% in the lat month and rose 5.1% in the last twelve months
